A local saint to teach the Catholic faithful of the world
Hildegard von Bingen, a visionary nun of the 1100s AD who is known for church music compositions and contributions to medicine and biology, was declared a saint of the full Roman Catholic Church in 2012 by Pope Benedikt XIV, who also named her a Doctor of the Church, one of four women to have the title. On her feast day of Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, parishioners are invited to take part in a pilgrimage in her honor, traveling by train from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to the Middle Rhine Valley town of Rüdesheim and then heading to the district of Eibingen, where the Benedictine order of nuns that she founded has its seat today. Auxiliary Bishop Leo Wagener of Luxembourg will celebrate a Pontifical Mass (with English translation) at 10 a.m. in the courtyard of the Pilgrimage Church (Wahlfahrtskirche) of Eibingen, followed by veneration of the saint's relics.
